Here's how I did with today's CVS shopping trip:

I used $14.97 in ECBs earned from last week's purchases, so the total spent after the coupons and ECBs I had was only $2.30, and my receipt says I saved $24.02. I earned $5 back in ECBs, so it's just like I WAS PAID $2.70 from the store for purchasing all of the above items.
As I stated in the Walgreens post right before this one, I'm really not impressed with this week's sales. Next week will be awesome though, so stay tuned!

Walgreen's Shopping Trip 5/31
I didn't do as well with either of my shopping trips today, but there really aren't any great sales going on this week. Don't get discouraged though, I'm already working on next week's list, and it is quite long! Quite a few awesome deals next week. Here's how Walgreen's went today:
Tide Liquid Detergent -
Air Wick Refills - two of these
Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Bars - four of these
Bic Soleil Disposable Razors
I used $4.50 in RRs earned from last week's purchases, so the total spent after the coupons and RRs I had was only $27.81, and my receipt says I saved $17.43. I used $12.52 in a Walgreen's gift card from an old rebate program, so my out of pocket spent in cash was $15.29. I earned $6 back in RRs, so it's just like I only spent $9.29 for all of the above items.
I'm not at all impressed with this week's sales, as I've done better than this on my weekly shopping trips. But overall, the Tide and Nutri-Grain Bars are VERY GOOD prices. Stay tuned and save your coupons for next week....it's a big one!

5/31 Sunday Inserts
This Sunday there will be two inserts in the newspaper: Smart Source and Red Plum. I have found that the Des Moines Register's SS and RP inserts are quite a bit larger than the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier has. We usually purchase both newspapers to double up on some coupons, and have found it is worth spending the money on extra newspapers each week, as we save a lot more with the extra coupons.

I used $9 in ECBs earned from last week's purchases, so my total spent after all the coupons and ECBs I had was only $26.14, and my receipt says I saved $35.62!

I earned $11 back in ECBs to use for next week, so it's just like I spent $15.14 for all of the above items. I will also be getting back $12.82 from my Flex Plan for the Bayer and Tylenol just purchased. So, adding together all of my savings and money back, my total out of pocket cost for these purchases is $2.32!! Not bad at all.
Walgreens Shopping Trip 5/17
I've decided to post my shopping trip details so everyone can see how well this can work. Here are the items I purchased today from Walgreens:

I used $8 in RRs received from last week's purchases, so my total spent after all the coupons I had was only $25.22, and my receipt states I saved $44.24!
One of the best parts is that I earned back $14 in RRs to use for next week, so it's just like I only spent $11.22 for all of the above items.
The second best part is that I also do the Flex Program at work, in which they take out pre-tax money for medical items. I will actually be getting back $24.57 just for the Excedrin, Band-Aids/Neosporin and Bayer Aspirin I just purchased. So, adding all of my savings and money back my total out of pocket cost is an AWESOME -$13.35 MONEYMAKER! My family is out NO MONEY AT ALL for all of the items I just purchased above, and we actually came out ahead. How's that for a good deal?

Awesome Target Deals
I don't usually shop at Target for grocery items, as I can never seem to get a really good deal, but that sure has changed tonight. Check out Ashley's new Target deals on Frugal Coupon Living. I just got back from Target and spent only $8.80 for 11 items (80-cents per item)!!!! Here's what I got:

They ship from Florida in three days. If you order on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday from them, you can have your coupons by that Friday before the sales are over. They are very reasonably priced, but do have a dollar minimum. I've stocked up on make-up coupons from them.

Start small, such as making a commitment to collect the coupons from Sunday's newspapers and get them organized (see my separate post on coupon organization). It honestly took me an entire week to research and learn the "coupon game" before I was ready to venture out on my first shopping experience. Don't think you will learn the "coupon game" overnight. It takes time and patience, but pretty soon, you'll be doing it like a pro! My first few weeks of couponing was nerve-wracking until I realized this actually does work and allows us to save a lot of money.
2. Create a "junk email account". Sometimes getting a good coupon does require you to register on a particular site, which you will then get a lot of junk email from. Creating a "junk email account" will stop these emails from being mingled in with the emails you actually WANT to receive.
3. The "coupon code" is: SALE + MANUFACTURER COUPON + STORE COUPON = AWESOME SAVINGS! Here's an example: Crest Pro Health Toothpaste on SALE for $3.49. When purchased, you get an ECB (CVS) or RR (Walgreens) for $2 to use towards your next in-store purchase. You can also combine a MANUFACTURER COUPON with the sale price, making your purchase even cheaper than advertised. Without using a coupon, your final price after the sale and ECB or RR would be $1.49. Let's say you also have a coupon for $1 off that tube of toothpaste, so your final cost has now gone down to $0.49 total. Not bad for a tube of brand name toothpaste. I've looked at Wal-Mart and Dollar General for cheaper prices, and haven't found any yet.
4. There are ways to "make money" off of purchasing items on sale. There's nothing better than getting paid to take an item from a store. I've gotten multiple toiletry items this way: Colgate toothpaste was sale at Walgreens one week for $3.49. When purchased, you would get an RR for $3.50 to use towards your next in-store purchase. I also had a manufacturer coupon for $1 off a tube of Colgate toothpaste, so I actually paid $2.49 out of pocket, but my RR still printed for $3.50!
5. On Buy One Get One items, you can use two coupons, because you are getting two items, even though one of those items is FREE (yes, this actually works).
6. Take the time and hand your coupons to the cashiers one by one. This will ensure all coupons have been scanned. Yes, the line behind you will be held up by this, but you can avoid angry people simply by checking out at the Cosmetics Counter in Walgreens. CVS usually doesn't have a long line of people at once, and if they do, it's usually others who "coupon" as well, so they're more understandable. You can always turn around, smile and apologize as well. When people behind you see how it's working, they just may have questions too!
7. Printing coupons at home will use a lot of your paper and ink. Look for paper sales and stock up then. Get printer ink refilled for less at Walgreens ($10 black, $15 color). Only print what you will actually use.
8. BE FLEXIBLE on brands. There are a lot of awesome coupons and sales out there if you’re willing to break free from brand loyalty.
9. Learn to stockpile, especially on groceries, when there is an incredible sale. Hy-Vee now has new weekly “Hot Deals”. Stock up on these hot deals items and build your meal plan for the week around the sales. You will spend a lot less on a weeks worth of groceries for your family, but come home with quite a bit more.

5/10 Sunday Inserts
This Sunday there will be two inserts in the newspaper: Smart Source and Red Plum. I have found that the Des Moines Register's SS and RP inserts are quite a bit larger than the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier has. We usually purchase both newspapers to double up on some coupons, and have found it is worth spending the money on extra newspapers each week, as we save a lot more with the extra coupons.

CVS Extra Care Bucks Program
CVS has an awesome reward program called the Extra Care Plan. Anyone can sign up for an Extra Care Card for free. Please remember it is very important to sign up as some of the store sales do not apply to your purchase unless you present your CVS card (or phone number) to the cashier.
The Extra Care Bucks (ECBs) program is similar to Walgreens Register Rewards (RRs). ECBs are found at the bottom of your receipt when you buy a weekly item that has an ECB reward. These ECBs also carry an expiration date, so pay close attention. CVS will advertise deals that show the final price after ECBs. The simplest way to describe this program is to use an example. This week Colgate Max Fresh Toothpaste is on sale for $2.99. When you purchase this toothpaste, you get $2 in ECBs back on the bottom of your receipt to use for your next purchase. Basically you will pay $2.99 up-front, but will be getting $2 back, making the final cost of this toothpaste only $0.99!

Yesterday I went to CVS and spent just over $6 out of pocket, but came home with $13 earned in ECBs to use for next week's purchases. Walgreens Register Rewards Program
Walgreens has a savings program called Register Rewards. A Register Reward (RR) is like “monopoly money” for Walgreens. Every week Walgreens offers deals that give you back RRs with certain purchases. They print out on a machine beside the register when you make a purchase. Cashiers will hand you any RRs earned with your receipt at the end of your purchase. They do have an expiration date, usually two weeks from the day they printed, so pay close attention to them. You can use these RRs on almost any item in the store (not for tobacco or alcohol products, or prescriptions) for your next purchase. There is a downfall to this program and using coupons in general at Walgreens. You can't use more coupons than the number of items you are purchasing in one transaction. For example, you can't use 10 coupons for 8 items (this coupon/item count includes the RRs). A simple trick to use when I have a lot of RRs and coupons want to use them all at the same time is to purchase some small piece of candy or some cheap wrapping paper just so my number of items matches my number of coupons. Also, if you are to receive $15 back in RRs, make sure you are actually paying at least $15 cash for your transaction. Your RRs won't print if you spend less out of pocket than you are set to receive back. Confusing, I know. It took me a few weeks to get this process down. Post your questions below.

How I Organize Coupons
Thanks to Ashley at Frugal Coupon Living, I have gotten some great coupon organization tips. Like her, I never cut out a coupon until I actually need it for a sale. All of my coupons are sorted in a cheap binder and separated by the type of insert (ex: PG, SS, RP). I write the date on each individual insert to make it easier to match my coupons with sales (there are many websites where you can get coupon matching info, more to come on that later). Other sections in my binder are for the current Walgreens and CVS ads, and for restaurant coupons. Once my weekly list and coupons are sorted and ready for shopping, they go into a cute accordian file, which is also separated into different categories: CVS, Walgreens, Target, Hy-Vee, and then sections for household, toiletries, medical and groceries (for coupons already cut out, but not yet needed). When I get to a store, all I take in with me is my envelope with the coupons and list for that particular store. I will post pictures at some point showing my binder, store envelopes and accordian file for visuals.
Where To Get Coupons
I get 99% of my coupons from the Sunday Des Moines Register and the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier. We have found the Des Moines Register usually has three times the amount of coupons in each insert than the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier has, so it is well worth the money to purchase each newspaper every week (and doubling up on some coupons is never a bad idea).
There are three main inserts in the newspapers: Proctor & Gamble (PG), Smart Source (SS) and Red Plum (RP). PG inserts are usually just the first weekend of each month, and these coupons expire the last day of the month they come out in. SS and RP inserts are usually in every Sunday paper, with the Des Moines Register having quite a bit more than the Courier.
There are times I am wanting a particular coupon for a really good sale, but I don't have it in any of my inserts. The Coupon Clippers is a very good resource in this type of situation. Shipping is very fast and I've always gotten my coupons before the end of the week.
Coupons.com is also a very good resource for printable coupons. The only problem with printing coupons yourself is you will go through ink and paper pretty quickly. Walgreens fills printer ink for a very reasonable price.
